Kindred Spirits

For as often as I have my photo taken I highly loathe having portraits taken, and I’ve honestly only sat down for a studio session three times in the nearly three years that I’ve been blogging. The previous two times I wasn’t a fan of how the photos turned out – at all. I never liked school picture day and even more so as an adult. This last time around though? Completely different experience, and if you’re looking for a portrait photographer in Louisville then you’re in luck.

Louisville is quite possibly one of the biggest, little cities around, and while I’m not sure how I originally met Anna – the first time I remember chatting with her was after a meeting I had at Please & Thank You.

Ran into her later that night at a gallery opening at Revelry. We chatted about what work looks like for me, what all she does, and well – the rest is history.

Typical shoots for me are pretty straight forward. I’m wearing an outfit. Focusing on a product. Etc. This shoot was completely different and helped me realize a few things about myself and the photos I share on the blog.

Anna and I sat down a few days before the shoot and talked about what I wanted out of this shoot. Which is honestly the first time I’ve had that conversation with a photographer. What story(ies) did I want my photos to tell? The things my IRL friends know about me, but that you would never guess about me from photos; for instance that I’m 6’4″, incredibly laid back, easy going, and probably a little too chill for my own good.

When I got the first couple of proofs back from the shoot I was blown away by the fact that Anna was able to capture all of the above, and that the few hours we spent together felt nothing like a typical studio session. A few of the photos even brought tears to my eyes because while I don’t think I take bad photos I do feel that typically my personality doesn’t show through.

Needless to say after this shoot I’ve learned to loosen up a little bit, and stop trying to take photos like every other blogger out there. I’m definitely not sample size, and I wasn’t born to be a model. Time to shake it out, smile a little more frequently, and stop taking myself so seriously.
