Coffee on Ice

Louisville gets a lot of things right, especially in the food and beverage world, except one thing: iced coffee, and it breaks my heart – truly.

Sure. Our coffee shops have my favorite summer beverage of choice readily available, but the restaurants? Nope. We’re stuck with hot coffee, even when it’s 90 degrees outside, and as much as I need coffee with my brunch I just can’t bring myself to indulge in a hot cup of coffee when I’m sweating it out on a patio – no matter how badly I need some caffeine in my life.

We all know how much I love my coffee, but I have a really, really hard time drinking hot coffee once I leave the comfort of my home during the warmer months. I honestly never thought about the possibility of having iced coffee on the menu at a restaurant until I was in New York City last July for Fashion Week. You see, coffee is a must during that week (more so than usual), even when I’m sweating from the time I hit the streets until my head hits the pillow.

I sat down at my table, more wet from sweat than I care to remember, and was about to bite the bullet and order a hot coffee when the waitress offered an iced alternative. Over the next couple of days I noticed that the majority of the restaurants I sat down at during my stay afforded me the same option.

Since then it’s like a whole new world of possibility was opened to me, and while Louisville hasn’t quite caught up with our metropolitan counterpart, yet, thanks to the folks at Nespresso I’m able to whip up iced coffee from the comfort of my own home to have with breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner or whenever I’m plugging away at work on the back porch.

Up until now I’ve never really mastered the art of crafting iced coffee at home. They’ve always ended up watered down, tasting bland, or being nothing like the ones I pick up from one of the many coffee shops around town.

To be honest I had kind of given up on the whole art of mastering iced coffee at home and had relegated that task to the baristas at coffee shops around town. After being introduced to my new Nespresso machine and their flavorful capsules crafting the perfect iced coffee at home is as simple as pressing a button.

If you’re familiar and/or can commiserate with my plight then today’s your lucky day because I’m including two easy to follow and three-ingredient recipes, after the jump, for the perfect iced coffees at home time after time.
