Know Your Limits

The Kentucky Gent, a men's fashion and lifestyle blogger, shares advice on knowing your limits.

I’ve been in the Big Apple for almost a week now, and my batteries are close to empty. Because it never fails. I always bite off more than I can chew. Call me an overachiever, or crazy, cause I definitely walk a fine line between the two of them, and NYFW has been no exception. I was confirmed for close to 30 shows this season, and set out with the intention of seeing all of them. But like we all know the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

The first couple of days were great I made it all my shows (mostly on time), but as the days went on and my calendar still continued to fill up I was left feeling more than stretched a little thin. I have a really, really hard time saying no. Especially when it comes to things related to the blog, which let’s be honest is just about everything anymore. The biggest lesson I’ve learned and am still learning about being self employed is to know your limits.

While I definitely believe that the sky is the limit I also realize that there are only 24 hours in the day, and when you’re self employed there are never enough hours in the day to get everything that you want to get done, done. Lately I’ve been feeling pulled in ten different directions – at all times, and before I know it things start to fall through the cracks. If I’m not careful I ended up dropping the ball in a major way; whether it be an article that was due last week (my Thrillist editor probably hates me), or a social media assignment that a PR team has to approve.

Yesterday I took some much needed time to sit down and decompress, and get my focus back in the line for the rest of my trip. With some coffee + the view from my room at Hudson I was back on track in no time at all, and below are some things I came to terms with yesterday.

Stick To A Schedule

When you make a schedule, stick to it. If you say you’ll be somewhere, be there. If you feel like you’re going to stretch yourself too thin by taking on too many projects or RSVPing to one too many events then take a step back and realize you need to do what is best for your brand

Dress For The Job

You never know where the day make take you, especially when you’re in NYC or on a business trip. What originally started out as a slow day of shows, turned into an after party with some of the biggest names in the business. Thank god I took time to dress the part before leaving the hotel that morning.

Learn To Say No

This is something I’m still working on, and will probably work on until the day I die. But admitting you have a problem is the first step, right?

Take Time For You

Whenever I’m traveling I never give myself time to stop and enjoy the moment, but when I do I’m incredibly thankful that I did. Whether that be sitting in your hotel with a coffee while enjoying the view, or taking a nap. Trust me when I tell you that you’ll be grateful that you did.

Keep tagging along on Twitter & Instagram for my final few days at NYFW this season. Today’s gonna be full of meetings + meeting online friends IRL for the first time, with a few shows in between of course.
