They say how you spend New Years Day sets the tone for your year, and I started my new year with 108 sun salutations over 4 hours with 100 other yogis in Louisville. When I say the energy in the room was contagious, I’m not exaggerating. By no means am I a devout yogi in any sense of the word I do enjoy practicing yoga on occasion. With that being said this was my first practice in over 2 years – I’ve been a slacker, obviously – but I couldn’t think of a better way to start my new year off + get back into a fit lifestyle.
When my friend Danielle first told me that I should come out and join the team at 502 Power Yoga and lululemon for 4 hours of yoga on January 1st – of all days – I was more than a bit hesitant. But upon realizing that the purpose of the day was to set an intention of health, wellness, community, and gratitude that will last throughout the year I was on board. Besides focusing on getting the Louisville community in the right mindset for 2015 the Yoga Mala also benefited the Africa Yoga Project. 12 instructors from around the Louisville area, representing different styles of yoga, joined together to guide our community through 108 sun salutations. I was more than glad to crawl into bed early night before last instead of being out partying. I want this year to be one unlike any others that I’ve had in the past, and there’s no better way to do that than doing something I’ve never done, instead of repeating old habits. Here’s my challenge to you, step outside your comfort zone this year. Do things that you never thought you’d be able to. It’s SO incredibly rewarding when you accomplish something that you never dreamed you’d be able to, plus it’s a sure fire way to promote personal growth. I’m committing to start practicing yoga more frequently because even though I’ve not felt this tired in months I’ve also not felt this level and clear headed in years. Keep up with 502 Power Yoga on Facebook and join in on the fun next time they host a workshop.
