Dear 14-year-old Josh, today’s #NationalComingOutDay, and you’d be so proud of where we are now. I’m so thankful that you were brave enough to stand in your truth from such a young age, and here are a few things I wish I could’ve told you years ago.

To the kid outed at 14 years old by someone we trusted: we’re blessed with an amazing circle of friends who are family and who you trust with your life.

To the kid that’s parents' first response to your bravery was to ask, “Do you think it feels good to take it up the ass”: we’ve always been more than our sexuality, and we continue to rise above the oversimplifications of what it means to be a queer man.

To the kid that tried to take his own life on more than one occasion, either by your own hand or by purposely putting yourself in harm’s way: we’re so glad the universe had bigger plans for us, and we’re so proud that we’ve always been a fighter.

To the kid that dated all the wrong guys because he was told he’d never find happiness as a queer man: we’re learning to love ourselves in a wholeness that even I didn’t think was possible for a long time, and we’re excited to share that with someone, one day.

To the kid that crashed on couches and lived in friend’s living rooms for a few years: we just bought our first house, all by ourselves, and we love it - even if it’s been challenging.

To the kid that survived years of Christian “love” and therapy, rounds of anti-depressants, and multiple attempts to pray the gay away: we were never broken, and the world is so much bigger, queerer, and prouder than we ever thought possible.

To the kid who worried he’d never be enough: we take life as it comes at us and experience it all to the fullest. Life happens through us, not to us, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Lastly, to the kid waiting to hear the words, “I’m Proud of You”: I’m proud of you and all you’ve survived. #itgetsbetter #comingout #queerpride #lgbtcommunity #lgbtq🌈
